Bill Tomes retired Professor, University of South Carolina Institute of Public Policy, will be leading participants through introductions and Logic Modeling.

September 14, 2018

Brian Buzby current Executive Director of North Carolina Conservation Network will focus on program evaluation and performance measurement.

October 11, 2018

The instructor for the first day in October is Jim Bush. The session will deal with financial resource development. This will include:

  • Budgets
  • Meeting requirements of funding sources
  • Meeting requirements of regulatory/oversight bodies and government
  • Meeting management requirements


October 12, 2018

Michael Sponhour, Executive Director of Communications and Outreach with the Ohio Department of Education will lead a session on managing external relations. This will include issues related to:

  • Media
  • Constituencies
  • The public
  • Political/governmental entities
  • Social media


November 8, 2018

Linda Pearce Edwards (Specialist in Labor & Employment Law) and Arthur E. Justice, Jr. (Trail lawyer with Turner Padget) will lead a session emphasizing contract and human resource law.

November 9, 2018

Alfreda Barringer Florence County Finance Director is the instructor for the first day in November. She will focus on financial resource management. Topics will include:

  • budgets and cash flows
  • reading and understanding financial statements
  • meeting requirements of funding sources
  • meeting requirements of regulatory/oversight bodies and government
  • tools for effective financial management


January 11, 2019

Kaye Koonce, the General Counsel and Senior Vice President at Trident Technical College, will lead the January session. This session will have an emphasis on governance and human resource capacities. Issues to be examined include:

  • board responsibilities
  • staff responsibilities
  • legal structure (by-laws, tax code, relevant statutes)
  • capacity issues related to


February 15, 2019

Dr. Moss Blachman, from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, will instruct the February session. This session will focus on program effectiveness for non-profit organizations to include the following topics:

  • shared vision
  • good judgment and integrity
  • alignment of all parties and how to create that
  • team building and collaboration
  • cooperation with other non-profits, government, and individuals


March 8, 2019

Governor Jim Hodges This session will have an emphasis on public policy. Some of the issues to be examined include:

  • childcare
  • education
  • healthcare


April 25-26, 2019

Bill Tomes, retired Professor, University of South Carolina Institute of Public Policy will discuss case studies and summary of courses.
